Aluminium or steel folding gazebo?

Comparing weight, stability and corrosion resistance

Aluminium has a lower density than steel and offers high corrosion resistance. This makes it well suited to mobile folding gazebos. Stability, however, depends on the complete frame design, not just the material used.

The main differences

Why does Ecotent use aluminium frames?

Ecotent uses aluminium frames across all three product ranges. The material’s relatively low weight helps with handling, while different profile dimensions, wall thicknesses and connectors allow the frames to meet different requirements.

To decide whether an aluminium or steel folding gazebo is better suited to your needs, you need to compare specific models. These are the four main criteria:

  1. Weight and handling: How much does the complete model weigh?
  2. Frame design and stability: Which profiles, wall thicknesses and connectors are used?
  3. Corrosion resistance: How do the materials react to moisture and other external conditions?
  4. Repairability and support: Can damaged components be replaced individually?

Weight and frame design

1. Is an aluminium folding gazebo lighter than a steel gazebo?

At equal volume, aluminium weighs around one third as much as steel. However, this does not mean that a complete aluminium folding gazebo is automatically three times lighter. Its actual weight also depends on its size, profile geometry, wall thicknesses and connectors.

A lower overall weight can make the gazebo easier to transport, set up and take down regularly. This is particularly useful for market stalls, exhibitions, promotional events and mobile catering.

Stability cannot be assessed from the material alone. It depends on how the legs, scissor profiles, connectors, base plates and anchoring system work together. The technical specifications of the individual models should therefore always be compared.

Conclusion: aluminium makes comparatively lightweight frame designs possible. To assess stability, you need to consider the complete construction and the technical specifications of the chosen folding gazebo.

Corrosion resistance

2. How corrosion-resistant are aluminium and steel?

Aluminium naturally forms a protective oxide layer on its surface. This protects the material against corrosion in many conditions. Aluminium therefore does not rust in the same way as ferrous steel.

Steel frames can also be protected against corrosion by galvanising, powder coating or other surface treatments. If the protective layer is damaged or not maintained correctly, the risk of corrosion can increase in the affected areas.

Regardless of the material, correct use, regular cleaning and dry storage are important. This is particularly relevant after use in high humidity or demanding environments.

Conclusion: aluminium offers high corrosion resistance and is therefore well suited to mobile folding gazebos. Proper care and storage are still essential.

Challenging environmental conditions

3. What should you consider around sea air and ammonia?

Salt-laden coastal air, ammonia-rich environments and other aggressive substances can affect surfaces and connectors over time. Aluminium is not completely unaffected by these conditions.

If the folding gazebo is used regularly near the coast, in agricultural settings or in similarly demanding environments, it should be cleaned in line with the care instructions and stored dry. You should also check the applicable warranty terms and exclusions.

Conclusion: aluminium is suitable for many outdoor applications. Regular care and correct storage are particularly important around sea air, ammonia and other aggressive substances.

Versatile outdoors

Using an aluminium folding gazebo in the garden

Because aluminium is ideal for outdoor use, aluminium garden tents are becoming increasingly popular in gardens as well. They are particularly suitable as party shelters or as an alternative to a porch, tool shed or garage. Our high-quality aluminium products provide a pleasant shaded area, protecting from UV rays, and a reliable waterproof shelter from rain. A well-accessorised garden tent is therefore ideal for outdoor use all year round.

Assessing sustainability

4. Is aluminium more sustainable than steel?

There is no reliable general answer. A meaningful environmental comparison must consider the entire folding gazebo and its life cycle – from raw materials and production to transport, use, repair and end-of-life treatment. A single material property is not enough to classify an aluminium or steel gazebo as more sustainable overall.

Ecotent can provide specific information about its products: many parts of the aluminium frame can be ordered and replaced individually. Damage to a single component does not therefore automatically mean that the entire frame has to be replaced.

For aluminium frames purchased from 1 January 2025, spare parts are available for 15 years. For earlier purchases, the availability period is 10 years. The relevant terms and conditions apply.

Conclusion: repairability, spare parts availability, warranties and documented technical data provide clearer criteria than broad environmental claims.

In summary

Why Ecotent uses aluminium frames

Ecotent uses aluminium frames for its E1, E2 and E3 ranges. When comparing an aluminium folding gazebo with a steel gazebo, these are the main points to consider:

  • Aluminium has a lower density than steel. The actual weight must still be compared using specific models.
  • Stability depends on the entire frame design, including profiles, wall thicknesses, connectors and anchoring.
  • Aluminium offers high corrosion resistance. Regular care and correct storage are still necessary in particularly demanding environments.
  • Many components of the Ecotent aluminium frame can be ordered and replaced individually.
